Circle Square was a Canadian children's television series that ran from 1974 to 1986. The series was produced by Crossroads Christian Communications in cooperation with the Circle Square network of summer camps for children of Christian parents. Mixing human actors — both youth and adult counselors — with puppets in a Sesame Street-like manner, the series was set at a Circle Square Library. Each episode taught a lesson in moral values and Christian faith. The series was syndicated to Canada and the United States, and usually aired in a weekend slot on stations that also aired Crossroads' 100 Huntley Street. 1984-1986 reruns of Circle Square were formerly shown Saturday mornings on the Trinity Broadcasting Network until late 2005 or early 2006. In 2003 a pilot for a new version of Circle Square called Circle Square Network was produced by Crossroads, but was never picked up. The Magic Circle Club was an award winning Australian children's television show, produced at ATV Channel 0 from 23 January 1965 to 1967. The program's style came from live pantomime and classic fairy tales. It often featured music, original songs and dance routines. Some older female characters were performed by males, in pantomime dame style. Godfrey Philipp was the producer and director, with many scripts and song lyrics by John-Michael Howson. Max Bartlett became a regular script writer in addition to his on-screen roles. Music was by Bruce Rowland and scenery designs by Brian Thomson. The show was hosted by Nancy Cato, cousin of the author of the same name. A later addition to the regular cast was Liz Harris, who also took over as hostess when Nancy Cato suffered temporary paralysis and had to use a wheelchair. In 1966, the TV series won the first Logie Award presented to a children's show, for Outstanding Contribution To Children's Television.
From 1955 until 1978, Circle 8 Ranch was a popular weekly country and western television program broadcast each Tuesday night on Wingham, Ontario's CKNX, Channel 8. It began as a radio program called the CKNX Barn Dance on CKNX's AM sister station. The half hour variety show was first hosted by broadcaster Johnny Brent, then later by musician Ernie King. The program featured popular country acts of the local, provincial and national stage. Each program ended with the memorable words "Lets say goodbye like we said hello, in a friendly kind of way..." Don Robertson's Ranch Boys hosted many CKNX Barn Dances in the Southcentral and Southwestern Ontario areas. The travelling show was an offshoot of the popular program. Regular cast members who developed into regional celebrities were Ernie King, Hugh Elder, Ross Mann, Don Robertson, Cora Robertson and Wayne Riehl. Over the years, the program helped launch the careers of such Canadian music luminaries as Tommy Hunter, Al Cherney, Gordie Tapp, The Good Brothers, Gordon Lightfoot and The Mercey Brothers.
